If your answer depends on insurer wording, send the schedule rather than guessing.
Send schedule screenshot What is the difference between Thatcham S5 and S7?
Both are Thatcham-approved vehicle trackers. S5 adds 24/7 staffed control-room monitoring and driver recognition tags. S7 is a real-time GPS tracker with smartphone alerts but no included staffed monitoring or driver tags.
Will an S7 satisfy my insurer?
If your policy schedule says “Thatcham approved tracker” without naming a category, yes. If it says S5, no — S7 will not satisfy it.
Is an S5 always better?
For very high-value or high-risk vehicles, yes. For a £20–30k family car where the insurer has not asked for S5, S7 often covers the need at lower subscription cost.
02 · Underwriter wording
Insurance requirements
Certificates, named brands and policy wording.
Read deeper Will my insurer accept the tracker you fit?
Every tracker we install is Thatcham-certified to category S5 or S7. We fit brands accepted by major UK underwriters and send the Thatcham installation certificate the same day.
Which insurers do you install for?
Admiral, Aviva, Direct Line, LV=, Adrian Flux, Hagerty, A-Plan, NFU Mutual, Lancaster, Sky Insurance, Performance Direct and many more.
My insurer named a specific brand. Will any S5 do?
If your schedule names a specific brand, fit that brand. We hold accreditation across the common named brands including Scorpion, MetaTrak, SmarTrack and Trackstar.
Will fitting a tracker reduce my premium?
Often — typical reductions are 5–25% depending on the underwriter and vehicle. We will tell you what is realistic; we will not promise figures we cannot back.
03 · Ongoing costs
Subscriptions
What monitoring plans pay for.
Why does a tracker have a subscription?
For S5, the subscription pays for the 24/7 ADR control room. For S7, it covers app access, GPS data and platform services.
How much is the subscription?
It varies by brand and tier. We show exact figures before you book, including annual, multi-year or lifetime options where available.
Can I switch tiers later?
Yes — every brand we fit allows tier upgrades or downgrades through the platform.
What happens if I stop paying?
The hardware is yours, but control-room or app service stops. Most brands let you reactivate later.
What is Ghost II?
A CAN-bus immobiliser fitted invisibly into your vehicle wiring. The engine will not start until you enter a PIN sequence using existing buttons.
Does Ghost II replace a tracker?
No. Ghost II prevents theft. A tracker recovers the vehicle after theft. The strongest install is often Ghost II + S5.
Will Ghost II void my warranty?
No. The install is non-invasive — no cuts, no splices, no removed components.
Can a thief defeat it with a diagnostic tool?
No. Ghost II is not a conventional alarm and does not appear in the OBD diagnostic tree.
Can it be moved to my next car?
Yes. We discount the labour on a re-fit.
05 · On the day
Install process
Time, hidden locations and visible footprint.
How long does an install take?
S7: 1.5–2.5 h. S5: 2–3 h. Ghost II: 2–3 h. Ghost + tracker stack: 3.5–4.5 h. Thinkware dash cam: 1–3 h depending on front-only or front+rear.
Where will the unit be hidden?
We do not publish hidden-fit locations. The position is non-obvious and varies by vehicle.
Will the install leave any visible footprint?
No. Cabling is concealed, trim is refitted to factory standards and there are no warning lights.
Do I need to leave the vehicle with you?
For a mobile fit, no — we do it on your driveway or at work. Workshop fits can be wait or drop-and-collect.
Where will you fit it?
Your home, office, storage compound, dealership or our Base Town workshop.
What do I need to provide?
A flat accessible parking spot, the vehicle key and your V5 to hand for registration. We bring everything else.
What if it rains?
Most installs work under any weather because we are inside the cabin. For a few longer Ghost programming jobs, we may suggest covered space.
Do you cover my postcode?
Probably. We cover Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York, Hull, Wakefield, Doncaster, Harrogate, Huddersfield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Pontefract, Castleford, Selby, Goole and surrounding postcodes.
What does insurance approved actually mean?
The tracker has been tested and certified by Thatcham Research to S5 or S7, and the install has been completed to the relevant standards.
What is the Thatcham certificate?
A document confirming the tracker make, model, serial number and category, signed off by the installer. We email it the same day.
Why does TASSA membership matter?
TASSA requires competence, public liability insurance, professional development and complaints procedures. It is the closest the trade has to a regulator.
Are you Thatcham-certified yourselves?
Thatcham certifies products and standards rather than individual installers. We install to those standards as a TASSA-member installer.
08 · Vehicle types
Compatibility & theft response
EVs, classics, vans and police response.
Can you fit a tracker on any vehicle?
We fit cars, vans, motorbikes, motorhomes, caravans, tractors and plant machinery. The right brand depends on the vehicle.
Will it work on my electric vehicle?
Yes. Trackers and Ghost II install cleanly on Tesla, Polestar, Audi e-tron, BMW iX, EQE/EQS, Ioniq, EV6, Taycan and more.
What happens if my car is stolen?
On S5, the control room sees unauthorised movement and liaises with police. On S7, the alert hits your phone and you report live location to police.
What if a thief uses a signal jammer?
S5 trackers use multi-network positioning and store-and-forward telemetry. Jamming delays the data rather than stopping it.
Will police actually use tracker data?
Yes. S5 brands maintain force-liaison desks and UK police are familiar with major tracker control rooms.
