Does Aviva Require a Tracker? The Installer's Guide to Aviva-Approved Fitting
Aviva is one of the UK's largest insurers, covering a wide spread of vehicle types from everyday family cars through to high-value SUVs, performance cars and Aviva Private Clients policies. Tracker requirements vary sharply by vehicle value and policy type — standard Aviva policies often have no requirement, while Aviva Private Clients and high-value vehicles usually specify Thatcham CAT S5. We install for Aviva customers across Yorkshire every week and send the certificate to Aviva the day we fit.

Aviva in one paragraph
Aviva is a mainstream UK underwriter with a wide policy range, including Aviva Private Clients (previously Aviva Premier) for high-net-worth customers covering premium SUVs, performance cars and specialist collections. Mainstream Aviva policies follow a risk-based approach; Private Clients and higher-value cars are noticeably more prescriptive on security — S5 trackers, named brands and, increasingly, immobiliser recognition.

Important
Aviva Private Clients / High Net Worth
If your Aviva cover is through Aviva Private Clients (their high-net-worth offering), tracker conditions are usually stricter:
- S5 required on most cars above a value threshold (commonly £50k+, sometimes £75k+).
- Named tracker brand lists occasionally appear — typically Scorpion, MetaTrak, SmarTrack and Trackstar.
- Ghost II recognition — Aviva Private Clients increasingly recognise Autowatch Ghost II as a positive risk factor on keyless vehicles.

How to check your own Aviva schedule
Open your Aviva policy PDF. Look for:
- "Endorsements" or "Policy Conditions"
- "Security requirements"
- Any reference to "Thatcham", "CAT S5", "CAT S7" or "tracker"
- Aviva Private Clients policies sometimes have security conditions inside a separate "Security Schedule" document — check both.
Not sure? WhatsApp a photo of the Endorsements / Security page — we read Aviva wording every day.

Which Thatcham category Aviva accepts

Ghost II
Ghost II alongside an Aviva policy
Aviva Private Clients increasingly recognises Autowatch Ghost II as a positive risk factor on keyless and high-value vehicles. Mainstream Aviva handles it less formally, but a Ghost II fitment letter supports a renewal conversation. For high-value vehicles (Range Rover, Defender, AMG, M-car, RS Audi, Porsche), the Ghost II + S5 stack is the installer-recommended combination.

Questions we're asked most
Aviva tracker FAQs
Will Aviva accept any Thatcham-approved tracker?
Mainstream Aviva, yes. Aviva Private Clients schedules sometimes name specific brands — send us the wording.
My Aviva Private Clients policy names a brand. Can I fit an equivalent?
Only if the schedule says "equivalent" is accepted. Otherwise fit the named brand — we hold accreditation across all major UK brands.
How quickly does Aviva process the certificate?
Usually a few working days after receipt. Your account manager can confirm.
Is my Range Rover required to have S5 under Aviva?
On mainstream Aviva with a £60k+ Range Rover, usually yes. On Aviva Private Clients, almost certainly yes.
Will Aviva reduce my excess as well as my premium?
On Aviva Private Clients, sometimes — particularly theft excess. Ask your account manager.
Can I fit the tracker before I've bought the car?
Only after the VIN is registered to you. Most customers book the install for the day after collection.
Does fitting a tracker affect my renewal?
At renewal, Aviva usually rates the policy including the tracker, which should reduce premium. Send the certificate before renewal.
My Aviva policy requires a tracker but I've bought the car second-hand with one fitted — is that OK?
If the previous owner's tracker is still active, yes — register it in your name and send proof to Aviva. If inactive or removed, fit a new one.
