What a Thatcham CAT S7 tracker actually does
Thatcham category S7 is the entry-level Thatcham-approved tracker — and “entry-level” is not an insult. It’s the right product for a large slice of UK vehicles: trades vans, second cars, motorhomes, caravans, mid-value family SUVs, and any vehicle whose insurer is happy with self-monitoring rather than a 24/7 control room.
Real-time GPS tracking
S7 reports your vehicle's position continuously to the manufacturer's platform, usually with GPS plus Glonass for redundancy.
Smartphone monitoring
You are the monitor. The app pings your phone when the tracker detects unauthorised movement, ignition or geofence breach.
Movement and tow-away alerts
Geofences, movement triggers and inertia detection catch vehicles leaving home, work, depot or storage without permission.
How S7 differs from S5
S5 adds 24/7 staffed control-room monitoring (ADR), driver recognition tags, and a higher-grade installation standard. S7 keeps the GPS hardware and app, drops the tags and the staffed monitoring. If your insurer has written “Thatcham S5” on your schedule, S7 won’t satisfy it. If your insurer has written “Thatcham approved”, S7 almost always does.
When S7 is the right choice (and when it isn’t)
Pick S7 when:
- Your insurer asks for a Thatcham-approved tracker without specifying S5.
- Your vehicle is mid-value or you do not want an ongoing ADR subscription.
- You want app-based self-monitoring and you respond to phone notifications.
- You are protecting a van, motorhome, caravan, second car or fleet vehicle.
Pick S5 instead when:
- Your insurer’s policy schedule names S5.
- The vehicle is over £40k–£60k and keyless.
- You want a staffed control room to react if you do not see the alert.

- “Thatcham approved tracker required” without specifying category → S7 is accepted.
- “S7 minimum, S5 preferred” → S7 satisfies the policy; S5 may earn a further premium discount.
