What a Thatcham CAT S5 tracker actually does
Thatcham Research is the UK insurance industry’s vehicle-security testing body. Its tracker categories run from S7 up to S5, with S5 being the strongest grade routinely used on the road. An S5 tracker is more than a GPS dot — it’s an integrated theft-detection and recovery service, signed off to a defined insurer-grade standard.
Three things make an S5 install S5:
Driver recognition tags
Each authorised driver carries a small tag. Engine starts without one paired — alarm at the control room within seconds. Even cloned keys can't beat this.
24/7 ADR control room
Staffed monitoring around the clock. Alert verified with you, police liaison, port authorities where needed. Recovery rates routinely above 90% when reported promptly.
Multi-network resilience
GPS + GSM + Glonass + Galileo positioning. Store-and-forward telemetry under jamming. Your tracker doesn't go dark — it goes quiet, then talks.
How an S5 install differs from an S7
The hardware family looks similar, but S5 adds the driver tags, the ADR control-room subscription, and the higher-grade installation standard required for sign-off. An S7 fit is faster and cheaper; an S5 fit is what most insurers will name on the schedule of a £40,000+ car. We cover both — but if your insurer has written “Thatcham S5” on the policy, S7 won’t satisfy it.
Why insurers want S5 on high-value and keyless cars
Underwriters look at your vehicle’s theft risk, not just its value. A 2020 Range Rover Sport, a recent BMW M3, a Mercedes G-Wagon and any 2018+ Ford Transit Custom all share the same problem: keyless entry, CAN-accessible OBD ports, and an active resale market — domestic, Eastern European, and Middle Eastern.
Most insurers respond with one of three positions:
| Insurer position | Example underwriters | What we fit |
|---|---|---|
| S5 mandatory above a value threshold (often £40k–£75k+) | Hagerty, A-Plan high-value, Adrian Flux performance, NFU Mutual on premium | S5 with the named brand or an equivalent on their accepted list |
| S5 or S7 acceptable, S5 reduces premium | Admiral, LV=, Direct Line, Aviva (case by case) | S5 if you’re keeping the car; S7 if you’re price-sensitive |
| No tracker required but recommended | Standard cover on lower-risk cars | S7, optional Ghost II |
How we install your S5 tracker
We treat every S5 fit as a security install, not a stereo job. The tracker only works if it’s hidden, wired correctly into the vehicle’s CAN bus, and signed off so the control room sees the data the way it expects to.
Three stages
- 01
Pre-fit
Insurer schedule · vehicle · subscription tier
Before you pay anything we confirm three things over WhatsApp or phone: which Thatcham category your insurer requires (S5 vs S7, named brand if any), the subscription tier that satisfies it (some insurers require ADR Plus or Premium), and the vehicle specifics (year, model, factory alarm, keyless or not). You'll get a fixed price including the subscription, the install, and the certificate.
- 02
On the day
Hidden-fit · CAN integration · tag pairing
The unit is fitted in a non-obvious location — never the published "tracker spots" the chop-shop trade circulates. We integrate with the vehicle's CAN bus where the brand specifies, pair your driver tags, and bench-test cell signal and GPS lock before we button it back up. Typical install time: 2–3 hours. We work on your driveway, in a work car park, or at our workshop.
- 03
Post-fit
Certificate · app onboarding · insurer notification
We register the unit to you with the manufacturer's control room, walk you through the app on your phone, and email the Thatcham installation certificate to you on the day. With your permission we'll also email it directly to your broker or insurer so the policy schedule is updated without you chasing it.
S5 tracker brands we fit

Insurance benefits of fitting an S5
There are three:
- Cover validity. If your insurer has named S5 on the schedule and the car is stolen without one fitted, the claim can be reduced or refused. Fitting S5 is the simplest way to keep the policy honest.
- Premium reduction. Most insurers we deal with reduce annual premiums 5–25% when an S5 is added — figures vary by underwriter and vehicle. We’ll tell you what’s realistic for your insurer; we won’t promise numbers we can’t back.
- Excess protection. Some policies waive or reduce theft excess on S5-fitted vehicles. Check your schedule, or send it to us by WhatsApp and we’ll read it for you.
Theft recovery: what happens the moment your car moves
Walk it through — this is a real night, reconstructed from an actual recovery:
- 01
02:47
Vehicle moves on the driveway
No paired driver tag is detected. The tracker uplinks to the manufacturer's ADR control room within seconds.
- 02
02:47:15
Control room picks up the alert
An operator is already on the case before the car has left your street.
- 03
02:48
Operator calls you (and your backup contact)
You confirm "not me". The theft is now formally in progress and the escalation chain begins.
- 04
02:49
Police notified with live location
Through the control room's force liaison desk. They get the live track, not just a postcode.
- 05
02:50+
Vehicle tracked through Yorkshire
Typical thief routes: M62, M1, A1(M), or eastward toward Hull / Immingham / Felixstowe containers.
- 06
Hours, not days
Recovery co-ordinated
With the relevant force or port authority. Most recoveries happen within hours; many within minutes.
The driver-tag part of S5 is what makes step 1 fast. Without it, the system relies on you noticing the car is gone — which often doesn’t happen until the morning.
S5 installation cost and subscription tiers
Two costs make up an S5 fit: the install and the subscription.
Install · one-off
From £400
Includes hardware, hidden-fit labour, tag pairing, Thatcham certificate to your insurer.
Subscription
From £150/yr
Covers 24/7 ADR control room. Some brands offer lifetime subs — ask for the honest maths.
Most common pairingGhost II bundle
+ £400
Add the silent CAN-bus immobiliser. Stops the engine starting; pairs cleanly with S5.
We publish "from" prices so you're not chasing a quote — and we confirm the exact total in writing before booking. No hidden monitoring fees, no auto-renewal traps, and we'll explain what each subscription tier actually unlocks.
