Does Admiral Require a Tracker? The Installer's Guide to Admiral-Approved Fitting
Admiral doesn't automatically require a tracker on every policy — but on higher-value, keyless or theft-attractive vehicles, a Thatcham-approved tracker is a common condition on the policy schedule. We install for Admiral-insured customers across Yorkshire every week, and the pattern is clear: S7 is usually accepted, S5 is often preferred on premium cars, any Thatcham-approved brand is accepted, and the certificate needs to reach Admiral promptly. We send it the same day we fit.

Admiral in one paragraph
Admiral is one of the largest UK motor insurers, operating as a mainstream underwriter across cars, vans, multi-car and performance policies. Its underwriting approach is risk-based rather than prescriptive — the tracker requirement depends on vehicle value, theft risk and driver profile, rather than a blanket rule. Standard family cars often have no requirement; higher-value and keyless cars usually do.
Typical requirements
What Admiral typically requires
Standard family car, sub-£20k
No tracker requirement
Mid-value car (£20k–£40k)

Often "Thatcham CAT S5" — S5 required
Performance cars (M, RS, AMG, Type R)

Always read your own schedule — requirements are vehicle-specific.
Check your schedule
How to check your own Admiral schedule
Open your Admiral policy PDF. Look for:
- "Endorsements" or "Policy Conditions" — most tracker conditions live here.
- "Security requirements" — explicit security-based conditions.
- Any mention of "Thatcham", "CAT S5", "CAT S7" or "tracker".
Not sure? WhatsApp a photo of the Endorsements / Security page — we read Admiral wording every day.
Category accepted
Which Thatcham category Admiral accepts
"Thatcham approved" wording: S5 or S7 both satisfy — S7 is usually cost-effective unless the vehicle is premium.
"Thatcham S5" wording: only S5 satisfies. S7 won't.
"Thatcham S7" wording: S7 satisfies; S5 also satisfies (higher category always acceptable).
No requirement: fit either if you want the premium-reduction conversation. S5 typically earns a larger discount.

Ghost II
Ghost II alongside an Admiral policy
Admiral doesn't typically formally require an immobiliser, but fitting an Autowatch Ghost II alongside a tracker can unlock informal renewal discount conversations, protect against relay and OBD attacks the factory immobiliser can't stop, and close the prevention gap that a recovery-only tracker leaves open. We provide a Ghost II fitment letter that Admiral can note on the schedule.

Questions we're asked most
Admiral tracker FAQs
Will Admiral accept any Thatcham tracker?
Yes — Admiral accepts any Thatcham-approved brand across S5 and S7.
How do I send the certificate to Admiral?
Email it to your Admiral customer services address — we supply the PDF the same day as install. With your policy number, it's usually processed in days.
What if I miss Admiral's fit-by deadline?
Contact Admiral first — they usually grant a short extension if you've booked the install. WhatsApp us your deadline and we'll prioritise.
My Admiral schedule says "tracker required" but doesn't name a category — which do I fit?
Fit S7 if the vehicle is sub-£40k and not keyless; fit S5 if it's over £40k, keyless, or you want maximum premium reduction.
Will Admiral reduce my premium if I fit voluntarily?
Often yes — typical range 3–15% depending on vehicle and driver profile. Your Admiral renewal team gives the exact figure.
Does Admiral accept S7 on my Range Rover?
Depends on the schedule. If Admiral has specified S5, no. If it says "Thatcham approved", yes — though we'd still recommend S5 for a Range Rover.
Does Admiral accept Ghost II on its own instead of a tracker?
No — Ghost II doesn't replace a tracker. They do different jobs. If Admiral has required a tracker, fit the tracker.
Can I get a tracker fitted after I've bought the policy?
Yes — most Admiral-mandated customers fit mid-policy. Certificate goes to Admiral, re-rate at renewal.
