Why Defenders are stolen

Two generations, two very different theft profiles — but both benefit from the same protection layers:

L663 — Relay attack

< 60 sec

The current Defender is a modern, keyless, premium SUV with the same relay-attack surface as a Range Rover. Factory key signal captured through the wall, car starts.

L663 — OBD cloning

60–120 sec

OBD port cloning programmes a blank key in 60–120 seconds. Works on every L663 without an aftermarket immobiliser.

L316 — Parts stripping

Varies

Classic Defenders are targeted for parts — doors, roofs, bonnets, seat sets stripped in hours. Whole-vehicle theft simpler than modern cars. Rural storage makes response time critical.

Can I fit Ghost II on my 2014 classic Defender?

On post-2007 Puma-engine Defenders, yes. On earlier Tdi/Td5 models, the electronic architecture is too limited — we recommend a Thatcham CAT 2 immobiliser upgrade instead.

Will the tracker survive a Defender lifestyle (mud, farmyard, off-road)?

Yes. Units are installed inside the cabin CAN environment, not in exposed positions. For working farm Defenders, ATV Trac has an IP-rated variant as an alternative.

Does NFU Mutual accept any S5 on a Defender?

Usually yes, though they sometimes name a specific brand on high-value policies. Send the schedule.

Can you fit at my farm?

Yes — we travel to rural locations across Yorkshire. Typical farm-visit install duration 3.5–4.5 hours for a full stack.

What about my Works V8 / Heritage restomod — is there a hidden-fit option?

Yes. We have a documented hidden-fit S5 approach designed to preserve originality.

Will the tracker affect ADAS or Terrain Response on L663?

No — tracker and Ghost II are passive CAN-bus listeners; they don't interrupt any factory feature.

My classic has been restored and I don't want drilling or cable runs through new trim.

We don't drill on restored Defenders. Installs use existing routing paths and hidden-fit positions.

Can I get CESAR registration for my Defender?

For agricultural / farm-use L316 Defenders, yes — particularly where NFU Mutual or a specialist rural insurer wants it.

What's the typical install time on a mud-plugger working Defender?

Count on 3 hours minimum; more if the interior has custom fit-out.

Will fitting a tracker or Ghost II affect my Land Rover warranty?

No. Installs are non-invasive and reversible, carried out by a TASSA-accredited engineer.
