Engineer's Comparison Guide
Thatcham S5 vs S7 — Which Tracker Does Your Insurer (and Your Vehicle) Actually Need?
If you've landed here, your insurer has probably asked for a 'Thatcham approved tracker' and you're trying to work out whether you need an S5 or an S7. This is the engineer's version of that answer, not the sales version. We fit both categories every week across Yorkshire, and the honest truth is that neither is universally 'better' — they're different tools for different jobs.

The short answer
Which one is right for you?
Fit S5 if…
- Your insurer's policy schedule names S5
- Your vehicle is keyless and worth £40,000+
- You drive a Range Rover, Defender, BMW M, AMG, Audi RS or similar
- You want 24/7 staffed control-room recovery, not a phone notification
Fit S7 if…
- Your insurer says "Thatcham approved" without naming a category
- Your vehicle is mid-value (roughly £15k–£40k)
- You're comfortable acting on a phone alert yourself
- You're protecting a family car, trades van, motorhome or caravan
Still unsure? Send the policy schedule — we'll read the exact wording and tell you which category satisfies it.
Background
What Thatcham categories actually are
Thatcham Research is the UK insurance industry's security-testing body. It grades vehicle trackers into categories; the two in routine use are:
S5 — Higher grade
Everything S7 does, plus 24/7 staffed ADR monitoring, driver recognition tags, and a stricter installation standard.
S7 — Entry level
Real-time GPS tracker with smartphone app and theft alerts. No staffed control room, no driver tags as standard.
The older "CAT 5" and "CAT 6" labels still appear on older policies and map roughly to S5 and S7 respectively.

Decision tree
Work through these in order
Does your insurance schedule say "S5"?
→ Yes
Fit S5. S7 won't satisfy the policy.
→ No
Continue to step 2.
Is the vehicle worth more than £40,000, or keyless?
→ Yes
Strong lean toward S5 — even where S7 is accepted, S5 is the sensible default at that value.
→ No
Continue to step 3.
Will you see and act on a phone alert at 03:00?
→ Yes
S7 is usually enough.
→ No
Fit S5 for the staffed control room (shift work, heavy sleeper, second vehicle).
Fitting to a motorhome, caravan, trades van or family car under £30k?
→ Yes
S7 is the usual answer, unless the insurer has asked for S5.
→ No
Continue to step 5.
Is the vehicle a Range Rover, Defender, M-car, AMG, RS, Cayenne or similar?
→ Yes
S5 regardless — these vehicles are targeted specifically.
→ No
S7 is likely fine — send your schedule for confirmation.
By insurer
Who mandates S5
We work with every major UK underwriter. A rough mapping of current practice — always verify with your own schedule:
S5 mandatory above value threshold
Hagerty, Adrian Flux, A-Plan, NFU Mutual
S5 preferred, S7 accepted case-by-case
Admiral, LV=, Direct Line, Aviva
"Thatcham approved" — category unspecified
Most standard policies
No tracker required but recommended
Lower-risk cars on standard cover
Most reliable way to know: send us the schedule. We read insurer wording every day.

Worth knowing
Why some owners fit S5 even when S7 would do
- 1
Peace of mind
The staffed ADR control room reacts regardless of whether you've seen the notification. Shift workers, parents, and anyone with a second vehicle often prefer S5.
- 2
Recovery speed in organised theft
S5's driver-tag alert fires within seconds of movement without a paired tag — not after you check your phone in the morning.
- 3
Future-proofing
If you upgrade the vehicle in the next year or two, you may drift into S5-mandate territory. Some owners pre-empt.
Honest advice
When S5 is a waste of money (and we'll say so)
We aren't going to push S5 for the sake of the margin. S7 is genuinely the right answer for:
- Mid-value family SUV or estate where the insurer hasn't asked for S5
- Second car used mainly by a family member who monitors phone alerts
- Caravan where geofence + tow-away detection is the primary need
- Trades van under standard insurance where the policy doesn't specify S5
- Motorbike parked in a secure garage with the app on the rider's phone
In any of these scenarios we'll recommend S7 and tell you directly.
Brands that do both
Every brand we install offers S5 and S7
The hardware overlaps considerably; the difference sits in the subscription, the control-room service and whether driver tags are included. We'll recommend the brand that matches your insurer's list.
Upgrade path
Can I upgrade from S7 to S5 later?
Often, yes — within the same brand, upgrade the subscription tier and we post or fit driver tags. The hardware was already S5-capable in many cases. Or we can switch brands and refit at a reduced labour rate.
If you're likely to move up to S5 within 12 months (new vehicle, change of insurer), it's often cheaper to fit S5 now. We'll do that maths with you honestly.
Questions we're asked most
S5 vs S7 FAQs
Is S5 always the safer choice?
For high-value and keyless vehicles, yes. For mid-value vehicles where the insurer accepts S7, paying for S5 buys comfort more than cover.
Will my insurer refuse a claim if I fit S7 but they required S5?
Potentially — yes. An insurer can reduce or refuse a claim where a material policy condition like "Thatcham S5 required" hasn't been met. Don't gamble on it.
Does S5 always include driver tags?
Yes — driver recognition is part of the S5 specification. The control room flags any movement without a paired tag.
Can I use the same S5 tracker if I change car?
Yes — we can transfer most S5 installs to a new vehicle at a reduced labour rate. The subscription continues.
Does S7 drain my motorhome battery over winter?
No. Modern S7 trackers are low-current and engineered for long standing periods. For multi-month storage we can advise on a battery conditioner.
Do I need Ghost II if I have an S5?
They do different jobs. S5 recovers the vehicle; Ghost II stops the theft. Most owners of high-value keyless vehicles fit both.
Can I upgrade from S7 to S5 later?
Often yes — within the same brand you can upgrade the subscription tier and add driver tags. Or we can switch brands with a reduced labour rate. If you're likely to move up within 12 months, fitting S5 now is usually cheaper.
What happens if I miss a phone alert on S7?
You can upgrade to a staffed monitoring tier within the same brand. Or, if that concern is significant, fit S5 from the outset — its ADR control room doesn't rely on you noticing.
